The Health Benefits of a Hot Tub

Hot Tubs have been in use for thousands of years for both relaxation and to help relieve aches and pains. In the 1940s, a guy named Candido Jacuzzi came up with the concept of a submersible pump to give his son hydrotherapy treatments to help treat his rheumatoid arthritis. The aptly named ‘Jacuzzi’ formed the basis for the modern hot tubs just like the ones we hire out that you see in gardens today.

As we pointed out in our history of hot tubs post, the term “spa” is associated with treatment by water as the Latin phrase “salus per aquae,” means health through water. Both the Greeks and Romans believed that the natural springs and tidal pools were blessed by gods and cured a range of diseases. And although hot tubs can’t quite cure diseases, they do have several health benefits, here are just a few of them:

Hot Tubs Can Aid Muscle Pain Relief

The warm temperature of a hot tub has the same effect as a hot pack or some form of heat cream would have on a sore muscle. The warm water helps loosen muscle tightness and also helps improve your blood circulation aiding recovery time.

If you’re lucky enough to have a hot tub with hydrotherapy jets like our very own Tahiti 7/8 Seater then the wall of jets can be used to apply direct pressure to a sore or painful muscle.

You can also carry out mild exercise whilst submersed in the hot tub as this is known to help improve flexibility.

Hydrotherapy for Joint Pain and Arthritis

Water makes the body buoyant and allows much freer movement of the joints. If you have ever seen an injured race horse start training again they always start them in a swimming pool as the body is up to 90% lighter when immersed in water.

The hot tub takes the stress off the joints allowing the body to move freely and without the pain associated with arthritis and other joint related pain. Again, the jets can also be positioned to apply pressure and heat to the joints reducing inflamation.

Better Ciruclation / Blood Flow Due to Warm Water

A hot tub is usually at it’s optimum when running between 37 – 39 C. The warmth of the water helps the dilation of blood vessels which in turns increaes the blood flow throughout the body.

Blood of course carries oxygen and this means that more oxygen & enzymes are being delivered to the muscles; again helping relieve aches and muscle pain.

If you’ve had a stressful day at work or you have things on your mind then you probably know how difficult getting a good nights sleep can be. If you relax in a hot tub for 20 minutes before bed the warm water not only provides relaxation but it’s proven to release endorphins which help reduce stress.
